Hispanic Heritage Month: Flavors That Unite Us

Hispanic Heritage Month: Today, we yield our space to Valentina, a student from Weston of Venezuelan origin. She put together a beautiful presentation on Hispanic Heritage Month, told through our wide and delicious gastronomy. Enjoy:

“Today, I want to talk to you about how we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through something we all love: food. I am excited to share how Hispanic gastronomy is not only tasty but also a reflection of our culture, diversity, and tradition. Plus, I’ll show you how the dishes we enjoy so much at home are actually a bridge that connects all of Latin America.”

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH: A CELEBRATION THROUGH FLAVOR

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the diversity of Hispanic cultures from September 15th to October 15th. During this time, families and communities across the United States and the world gather to honor our cultural heritage.

And, of course, we do it around the table. Sharing a meal is fundamental to our traditions, as the recipes passed down through generations have become symbols of our roots. What I love most is that even though every country has its own unique style, we share many common threads across Latin America. Here are some of the most delicious examples:

TEQUEÑOS: The King of Venezuelan Parties

If there is one thing that cannot be missing from a Venezuelan gathering, it’s tequeños. These delicious cheese sticks wrapped in crunchy dough are the perfect appetizer. Their history traces back to the Venezuelan city of Los Teques, and today they are a classic that has crossed borders. Whether at a family reunion or a quick snack with friends, tequeños are always there to make us smile.

AREPAS: More Than Bread, a Symbol of Unity

Another great representative of Hispanic food is the arepa, which is as versatile as it is flavorful. Made of corn, it is perfect for stuffing with all kinds of ingredients. From the traditional Reina Pepiada (chicken and avocado) to a simple ham and cheese filling, this wonder is even perfect on its own as a side dish. The interesting thing is that the arepa shares a common base with other Latin American foods, like pupusas in El Salvador or gorditas in Mexico.

PAN DE BONO: A Colombian Flavor Explosion

We can’t talk about Hispanic heritage without mentioning Colombian pan de bono. This soft, fluffy bread made with cheese and yuca (cassava) flour is ideal with a good cup of coffee. While it’s a breakfast staple in Colombia, its popularity has grown so much that you can find it almost anywhere in the world today.

EMPANADAS: A Recipe Without Borders

If there’s one dish with as many versions as there are countries, it’s the empanada:

  • Venezuela: Made with corn dough and filled with anything from shredded beef to pabellón.

  • Colombia: Small, crunchy, and filled with meat, chicken, or potato.

  • Argentina: An icon of the Southern Cone, made with wheat dough and typically filled with ground beef, onions, hard-boiled eggs, and olives. In essence, we all share that custom of enjoying a stuffed snack that is easy to eat and full of flavor.

Hispanic Heritage Month: EATING WITH YOUR HANDS: A Shared Tradition

Something I’ve learned is that in most Hispanic countries, eating with your hands is very common. From tequeños to empanadas, arepas, and pan de bono, these dishes are ideal to enjoy without utensils. Eating with our hands allows us to better savor the food and enjoy a closer connection with what we are eating. This is where the beauty of our cuisine lies: in living together, sharing, and celebrating our traditions.

A FLAVORFUL CELEBRATION

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate our culture, heritage, and traditions. Food plays a fundamental role because through these flavors, we share our roots and keep our customs alive. Trying this food is falling in love with it forever!”
